Mateja Gravner was born in Gorizia in 1973. Brought up among vineyards, fermentations and refinements, after studying oenology, she takes the road of communication and marketing. She works for years away from home, first managing wine promotion, then at the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige and subsequently at Bertani Domains. In 2014 she returns to Oslavia and she has since then been handling the commercial and marketing side of the family business.
Jenny Lefcourt, a native New Yorker, originally landed in Paris to study French film during her PhD at Harvard. After many visits to Paris wine bars and vineyards throughout France, all paths led to wine instead of academia. Jenny runs the company out of our Soho office in NYC. She lives on the Upper West Side with the talented photographer James Robinson and their daughter, Zoe, born Feb. 2012.
Jenny & François Selections was created in 2000. They distribute our wines in New York themselves, through USA Wine Imports. They also work with fabulous distributors in other states across the USA. They feel close in philosophy and goals to movements such as Fair Trade and Slow Foods, as well as environmental movements. Their hope is that Jenny & François Selections helps passionate winemakers, who respect the environment and high standards of quality, to continue what they do by bringing their wines to the United States. They love to educate about natural wines, and share their excitement for these wines with passionate wine professionals and individuals across the US.
Doreen Winkler is an expert sommelier and founder of Orange Glou, a unique wine subscription service and monthly wine bar pop up in New York devoted solely to skin contact wines. Although Doreen’s focus is on natural, organic and biodynamic wines that offer the purest expression of the grape and terroir, her deepest passion is for orange wine.
Doreen developed wine programs for over a decade as a sommelier and consultant for restaurants, bars, and wine retailers, including Aska, Aldea, Bar Glory, Lupulo, Sel Rrose, Trappizino, Moby’s and Urban Uncorked, among others. Her wine program for Aldea received the World of Fine Wine Best Wine List Award in 2015 and Forbes named her one of “America’s Top Sommeliers” in 2016.
Over the years, she has developed relationships with winemakers and worked harvests at vineyards across many of the world’s best wine-growing regions. Now, through Orange Glou, she is delivering a highly curated, personal selection of the most interesting and distinct orange wines in the world.
Simon J. Woolf:
Founder & editor of The Morning Claret, Simon is an award-winning English wine and drinks writer, currently clinging to mainland Europe in Amsterdam. He is somewhat obsessed with orange wines. Wine has been his muse for the last 20 years. Originally he just drunk the stuff, then started studying it. His writing career began with this site in 2011. He is the author of Amber Revolution, the world’s first book to tell the full history of orange wine.
Simon contributes regularly to Decanter and Meininger Wine Business International. He’s also written for Punch Drink, Jancis Robinson, timatkin.com, Palate Press, Harpers online and Catavino.net amongst others. There’s more detail in this interview by Wink Lorch, which first appeared in CWW quarterly.
